Effective reading
I am happy with my reading accomplishments in 2018 so far. Contrary to popular belief, even pleasure reading in this age of debilitating distractions takes resolve and discipline. Hence the use of the word “accomplishments.” My Goodreads target of 20 books has already been reached, although the year is only halfway over. One important change this year is the fact that many of the books were borrowed from the library. This provided an incentive to finish reading them in time and also hlped me gain a kind of momentum that allowed me to push through the list. An important realization for me is that getting the most out of reading does not mean reading everything. Even if that was possible, devouring books like an addict is not a very appealing idea. Reading for reading’s sake was never one of my motivations. For the best experience, narrow down the list of books, think about what in them interests you, and finally read them. Don’t just pick up the book when you feel like it. It’s something you want to do - a task - so treat it as such. Even if it feels like a chore at times, especially if the book is not very gripping, your bibliophile brain will thank you in the end.
